“A prayer whispered on the wind,” a voice murmurs beside you, “that’s how the story of Musholla Al Makmur begins.” We stand before Musholla Al Makmur, a humble structure tucked away on Jalan Pulo Gebang in Jakarta. Its story isn’t one of towering minarets or grand entrances, but of quiet resilience. The tale begins not here, but on the grand estate of Raden Saleh, a renowned 19th-century painter. Around 1850, he granted local Muslims permission to build a small prayer house on his land, a simple structure of wood and gedek. This act of generosity planted the seed for what would become Musholla Al Makmur. After Raden Saleh’s passing, the land changed hands, eventually coming under the ownership of the Alatas family. They sold a portion of the estate to Koningin Emma Stichting, the foundation behind Cikini Hospital. The prayer house, caught in a legal limbo due to an ownership dispute, was excluded from the sale. It was even moved to the banks of the Ciliwung River, allowing worshippers to perform wudu. The legal battle continued, with Sayyid Ismail Alatas eventually winning the rights to the land. He, in turn, sold the land to the hospital foundation, who in 1924 requested the small mosque be moved. The mosque authorities refused, citing the land as a waqf, a sacred legacy from Raden Saleh. A committee, including prominent figures like Agus Salim and Cokroaminoto, rallied to preserve the mosque. Between 1932 and 1934, they spearheaded renovations and expansions, transforming the simple prayer house into a permanent structure. The mosque’s location remained contested until 1991, when Cikini Hospital finally bequeathed the land to Musholla Al Makmur. It was a victory decades in the making, securing the legacy of Raden Saleh and the dedication of those who fought to preserve it. Now, Musholla Al Makmur stands as a testament to community perseverance and the enduring power of faith. It reminds us that even the smallest of structures can hold immense historical and spiritual significance.
