The Oertli family, led by Fridolin “Fritz” Oertli, arrived in Texas in 1904. Fritz, originally from Switzerland, started his journey in the cattle business. But it was in 1923, on a 700-acre property on Shoal Creek, that he established his dairy. Years later, the Oertli’s moved their dairy to Cameron Road, where they lived out their days. Margaretha, Fritz’s wife, became known for her Swiss cheese, while Fritz would serenade guests with his yodeling.
The Oertli Dairy, the last dairy farm in Travis County, finally closed its doors in 2001. Declining milk prices, labor shortages, and intense competition from larger companies led to the family’s decision to sell their Holstein cattle. To honor their legacy, the dairy property was dedicated to the City of Austin and became Oertli Park.
