In 1915, amidst the shadows of a world at war, Saint Martin’s Anglican Church At Saint Chad first opened its doors. It stood as a beacon of hope in the Auckland suburb of Sandringham. Originally known simply as St Chad’s, this humble mission chapel served as a spiritual haven for the community. Saint Martin’s at St Chad’s witnessed the joys and sorrows of generations. The church bell, a gift from Mrs. Alice Wylie in memory of her husband, rang out through the years, marking moments of celebration and remembrance. The bell fell silent for a time when the rope broke. It was later restored, reconnecting the church with its past and the Wylie family. The church’s story took a turn in 2004. The congregation of St Martin’s, Mount Roskill, displaced by motorway construction, found a new home at St Chad’s. The church was renamed Saint Martin’s Anglican Church At Saint Chad, a testament to the merging of two communities. The building itself, designed by Toy, is a unique blend of old and new. The original wooden structure became the nave. A reinforced concrete addition, built in 1954, houses the chancel and choir. The vertical design and the light filtering through the sidelights and roof lantern create a charmingly simple yet inspiring interior. Sadly, in 2022, after decades of service, Saint Martin’s Anglican Church At Saint Chad closed its doors, marking the end of an era for the Sandringham community.
