Slipping through time, imagine yourself in 1896. Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra arrive at Versailles-Chantiers station. They are greeted by French President Félix Faure. This visit highlights the historical importance of Versailles-Chantiers station. Versailles-Chantiers station isn’t just a transport hub. It’s a place steeped in history and architectural marvels. The station’s name, “Chantiers,” meaning “work construction area,” originates from the 17th century. During the construction of the Palace of Versailles, this district housed the workshops where stones were sized and shaped. The original Versailles-Chantiers station opened in 1849. The current Art Deco building, with its convex facade reminiscent of the Grand Trianon, opened in 1932. This design replaced a more imposing structure envisioned by architect André Ventre. The station’s blend of classical and modern elements captivated the press, who declared it “the most modern and daring of all the major stations in France.” Tragedy struck in June 1944 when bombings killed hundreds at Versailles-Chantiers station. Today, the station’s facades, rooftops, platforms, clock kiosk, main hall, and passenger hall are recognized as historical monuments. Versailles-Chantiers station underwent extensive renovations from 2011 to 2019. These renovations included a new hall, a 65-meter-long pedestrian bridge, and a 17-platform bus terminal. The station’s blend of historical charm and modern amenities makes it a vital gateway to Versailles.
