Why is this bridge shaped like a “T”? The Misuzu Bridge we are standing in front of may not look remarkable at first glance. But the Misuzu Bridge holds a poignant place in history. It was the original target of the atomic bomb in 1945. The bridge’s distinctive “T” shape, rare in Japan, was meant to make it easily recognizable from the air. The bomb missed its mark by about 800 feet, exploding instead over Shima Hospital. While the Misuzu Bridge survived, it suffered severe damage: deformed girders, a handrail plunged into the river, and a lifted sidewalk. Years later, in 1983, a new Misuzu Bridge was built, its design echoing the original. Yet, the past is not forgotten. You can still see scars of the bombing on preserved pillars and girders displayed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The Misuzu Bridge serves as a stark reminder of the devastation of that fateful day and a symbol of Hiroshima’s resilience and hope for peace.
