“This island is dedicated to the gods,” the old woman whispered, her voice barely audible above the lapping waves. “Itsukushima, they call it.” We stood at the edge of the wooden pier, the majestic silhouette of Itsukushima Shrine rising from the water before us. Itsukushima Shrine is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symphony of nature and architecture, carefully orchestrated to inspire awe and reverence. The shrine is dedicated to the three daughters of Susano-o no Mikoto, the Shinto deities of seas and storms. These powerful goddesses were believed to protect sailors and fishermen, and their presence can be felt in every salt-kissed breeze and the gentle sway of the shrine on the water. What makes Itsukushima Shrine truly unique is its “floating” appearance. Our ancestors believed that the entire island of Itsukushima was sacred. To preserve its purity, no births or deaths were permitted on the island. The shrine itself had to be built over water, separate from the land. This is why Itsukushima Shrine appears to float, a shimmering mirage during high tide. It stands as a testament to the deep spiritual connection between humanity and the natural world, a timeless reminder of the sacredness that surrounds us.
