“Expect track damage.” That’s a phrase you might hear before venturing toward Opopo Bay. This place isn’t just a scenic spot. It’s a journey through history and nature combined.

Opopo Bay is accessible from the Stony Batter Historic Reserve. It’s a walk that descends through farmland and native bush. This leads you to a gravel beach. The track to Opopo Bay might be overgrown. Extra care is needed when following the markers.

Let’s rewind a bit. Stony Batter itself is a place of significant history. It was once a counter-bombardment battery system. This system was installed in the Hauraki Gulf starting in the 1930s. Think of it as a defensive line against enemy naval forces. The ranges were far. They extended over 30 km. Observation posts were crucial. Rangitoto Island and Tiritiri Matangi Island served this purpose.

Construction at Stony Batter began in October 1943. It was a top-secret project. The location’s remoteness caused delays. The battery was referred to as A2 to conceal its location. Workers quarried tunnels and chambers by hand. They used concrete but no reinforcing steel due to shortages. The aggregate came from the rocky outcrops. This gave Stony Batter its name.

The work was completed in 1944. The cost had ballooned. It went from an initial estimate of 140000 pounds to 327966 pounds. By 1945, the war threat had subsided. Workers transferred to hydroelectric plants on the Waikato River.

Two BL 9.2-inch Mk IX – X naval guns were installed. One arrived in 1944. The other in 1948. These guns were massive. They had ranges of over 30 km. Their rate of fire was one round per minute. They were the largest guns ever used in New Zealand. The guns never fired in combat. They were dismantled and sold for scrap in 1961.

Now, back to Opopo Bay. Imagine walking from Stony Batter. You pass the turnoff to the main tunnel complex. Wooden marker posts guide you. The path winds through rock outcrops. As you descend, the landscape transforms. Farmland gives way to native bush.

Finally, you arrive at Opopo Bay’s gravel beach. Take a moment. Think about the journey. From a top-secret military installation to a peaceful bay. The contrasts are striking.

Remember “Expect track damage.” This reminds us of nature’s power. Storms can leave their mark. Be cautious. Respect the environment.

Opopo Bay offers more than just scenic beauty. It connects you to a rich history. It links to the strategic importance of Stony Batter. It is a blend of nature and human endeavor. This makes Opopo Bay a unique destination. A place where every step tells a story.
