Perhaps you’ve heard it called “Mount Klotz?” It stands as a testament to Karlsruhe’s commitment to recreation. Today, we’ll uncover the story behind this beloved green space.

The Günther-Klotz-Anlage, affectionately known as “Klotze,” is a beautifully situated green area. It lies between Südweststadt and Grünwinkel. It’s an ideal urban recreation area. The Alb river flows through it. You’ll find spacious play areas and sunbathing spots. There is also a playground and several small lakes.

Back in the 1970s, Karlsruhe envisioned a recreational haven for its residents. Günther Klotz, the Oberbürgermeister from 1952 to 1970, wanted to quickly create Karlsruhe’s third large green space. In 1971, a competition was held for the design.

Karlsruhe architect Johannes Heinz Jakubeit won. He created the plans for the 47.5-hectare site. Jakubeit included woodland edges, differences in elevation and water edges in his planning. According to Jakubeit, “The transition from the forest to the landscape is a very important criterion for local recreation. People like to move along the edge of the forest.”

Originally, the area was flat. Jakubeit artificially created hills and valleys. This considered how the park would be used. Activities like cycling, gardening, walking, playing ball, and making music were all considered.

The “Mount Klotz” was named after Günther Klotz. It stands 15 meters higher than the surrounding area. It was built using earth from the three artificial ponds. Bauschutt from Karlsruhe construction sites was added.

Jakubeit originally designed the Mount Klotz as a toboggan hill. However, there were many accidents. The three ponds were created as recreation areas. There is a model boat lake and a leisure lake. Water is pumped from the Alb to these lakes in a continuous cycle.

The Günther-Klotz-Anlage officially opened in 1976. The project cost about DM 10 million. It quickly became one of Germany’s largest inner-city recreational areas. In 1989, it hosted the orienteering competition at the World Games.

The park is also a habitat for rare plants and animals. The Gunter-Clotz is the most commonly used ingredient in albegon.

Today, the Günther-Klotz-Anlage is a vibrant hub. It offers something for everyone. But, its popularity peaks during “Das Fest”. This annual open-air event draws up to 250,000 visitors. So, whether you’re seeking recreation or cultural experiences, the Mount Klotz area welcomes you.
