Founded in 1877 St. Edward’s University stands proudly in Austin Texas. This isn’t just any university. It’s a place steeped in history and faith. Reverend Edward Sorin a remarkable figure founded St. Edward’s. He also established the University of Notre Dame. Can you imagine the vision it took? He named this institution after his patron saint King Edward the Confessor. St. Edward’s began as St. Edward’s Academy. It later became St. Edward’s College before finally achieving university status in 1925.
Early St. Edward’s faced challenges. A fire in 1903 destroyed much of the Main Building. A tornado in 1922 caused further damage. The Main Building a testament to resilience was rebuilt each time. St Edward’s continued to grow. President George E. Martin oversaw a period of massive expansion. New buildings rose transforming the campus. Enrollment doubled and the endowment increased substantially. St. Edward’s developed global partnerships. It even founded the Holy Cross Institute. This aimed to uphold the university’s mission and values. The university continues to strive for excellence. In 2022 Montserrat Fuentes became the first Hispanic president of St. Edward’s University.
Today St Edward’s University boasts a diverse student body representing numerous countries. It offers a wide array of academic programs across several schools.
