But what many don’t know is that this statue was born from the tireless efforts of UT students themselves. In 1987, a group of passionate individuals formed the Martin Luther King Jr. Sculpture Foundation with a vision to honor Dr. King’s legacy on their campus. They faced an uphill battle, navigating bureaucratic hurdles and fundraising challenges, but their determination never wavered. Their efforts culminated in a student referendum, a testament to their commitment, which ultimately secured the funding needed to make this dream a reality.
