Can you feel the history humming beneath your feet? Right here before us stands the Tepid Baths a testament to Auckland’s vibrant past.
This isn’t just a pool complex. It’s a living piece of Auckland’s heritage. Opened in 1914 the Tepid Baths quickly became a beloved spot for locals. Thirty thousand people flocked to the Baths in its first two months alone. Imagine the excitement the splashing the laughter echoing through these walls.
The Tepid Baths had a fascinating start. Before the Baths existed a small drydock occupied this very spot. The pools were initially saltwater pools fed directly from the Waitemata Harbour. They were even heated using a clever system drawing hot water from a nearby tramways power plant. This system was considered a marvel of engineering in its time.
The Tepid Baths weren’t just for swimming. In the early 1930s a pentecostal minister baptized a hundred new followers in one of the pools. A truly unique event in this historic building’s history. The Tepid Baths even employed local athletes Malcolm Champion a champion swimmer and Billy Savidan a renowned runner as custodians.
The Tepid Baths weren’t always fresh water. In 1974 the saltwater pools were converted to freshwater pools. This was primarily for maintenance reasons. Over the years the Tepid Baths underwent several renovations. In 1986 it received a facelift and again in 1997 after the YMCA took over the management lease. New saunas steam rooms and even a gym were added.
The Tepid Baths have always been central to the lives of Aucklanders. Today many people who work in the city’s central business district use the baths before or after work. In 2010 the Tepid Baths closed for a major $16 million restoration project. This was necessary to address structural issues caused by years of saltwater exposure. The Tepid Baths reopened in mid-2012 winning the New Zealand Project Management Institute’s Public Sector Project of the Year award.
The Tepid Baths aren’t just a place to swim. They’re a place of history community and resilience. They’ve withstood the test of time and continue to serve as a cherished gathering spot for Aucklanders. So step inside and feel the warmth of the Tepid Baths’ legacy.
