Curious about where taxes are managed in Manukau? Here at 5 Osterley Way stands the Inland Revenue \u2013 Manukau Service Centre. This is where many Aucklanders deal with their taxes. It is a key part of New Zealand’s tax system.

The Inland Revenue Department or IRD is also known as Te Tari Taake in Māori. Te Tari Taake means ‘The Department of Tax’. It is responsible for collecting most of the government’s revenue. It also administers several social support programs. The IRD plays a vital role in funding public services. These services include healthcare, education, and social welfare.

The Inland Revenue Department began as the Land Tax Department in 1878. It became the Land and Income Tax Department in 1892. The central office was set up in Wellington. In 1952, it merged with the Stamp Duties Department. That’s when it became the Inland Revenue Department.

The Inland Revenue \u2013 Manukau Service Centre offers face-to-face assistance. You can walk in or book an appointment. The opening hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. On Wednesdays, it opens from 10 am to 4 pm.

In 2021-22, Inland Revenue collected $100.6 billion in tax revenue. This money supports services for all New Zealanders. These include social security, health, and education. Other services include law and order and environmental protection.

The IRD has worked to simplify tax processes. Upgrades to myIR have made it easier to manage taxes online. This secure online service helps customers manage their tax and payments.

The department also administers social support programs. These include Working for Families tax credits. They also handle Paid Parental Leave payments. Child Support collection and payment is another key function. Additionally, they manage Student Loan debt collection and KiwiSaver.

The Minister of Revenue is responsible for the Inland Revenue Department. Since November 2023, Simon Watts has held this position. The Chief Executive and Commissioner is Peter Mersi.

Inland Revenue has faced criticisms. Some involve tactics for collecting debts. However, the IRD has also received awards. These awards recognize their service and innovation. In 2022, employees received the Public Service Commissioner’s Commendation for Excellence. In 2021, they were finalists for the Spirit of Service Awards. This was for investing in new technology.
