Established in 1954 Papakura High School stands proudly. It’s a place where history and future aspirations intertwine. This co-educational secondary school serves students from Year 9 to Year 13. Its location on Willis Road in Papakura places it at the southern edge of Auckland’s metropolitan area.
Papakura High School boasts a rich multicultural environment. Over 60 percent of its students are Maori representing various iwi. A significant Pasifika population adds to the school’s vibrant tapestry. Samoan and Tongan students are prominent but Cook Island and Fijian Indian communities also contribute. The remaining students are of European heritage.
The school’s structure is unique. It is organized into four whānau: Kirikiri Te Apārangi Otuuwairoa and Waipapa. These names honor significant places in the Papakura area. The school collaborated with Ngati Tamaoho leaders to select these names reflecting local iwi importance. This whānau system replaced the old house structure in 2017. Waipapa was added in 2024 due to substantial student growth.
The school motto Kia Rangatira is a Maori maxim. It calls for young people to rise as leaders. In Maori culture it challenges students to embrace a chiefly demeanor. Rangatira means high-ranking chiefly noble esteemed. This motto embodies the school’s commitment to developing future leaders.
Papakura High School offers the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). Students can take NCEA Level 1 exams as early as Year 11. Uniquely it offers NCEA Level 1 Humanities to academically able Year 10 students. The school also provides a Gateway program. This allows senior students to participate in work experience during the school term. A range of specialized subjects are available via correspondence. Workshops and information sessions support students’ chosen programs. The school integrated national qualifications into Mathematics Sports and Recreation Technology and Catering courses. It was the first in New Zealand to offer the Marae Catering course under NCEA.
The school’s alumni are impressive. Notable former students include All Blacks Ioane Fitu Afoa and Jerome Kaino. Professional boxer Junior Fa a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist also attended. Several Kiwi Ferns and New Zealand Warriors players are among its graduates. This diverse group of successful alumni showcases the school’s impact.
Papakura High School’s journey reflects continuous improvement. While a 2015 Education Review Office (ERO) report highlighted areas needing attention the 2020 report showed significant progress.
