Awakening to a world of clearer vision. That’s the promise whispered within the walls of the Singapore National Eye Centre. Right here, at 11 Third Hospital Avenue, stands a beacon of hope for those seeking better sight. The Singapore National Eye Centre, or SNEC as it’s often called, first opened its doors in 1990. It was born from a vision. A vision shared by dedicated ophthalmologists like Professor Arthur Lim. He saw a need for a specialized center. A center dedicated to leading ophthalmological services, research, and education. The Singapore National Eye Centre quickly became a reality. Not through lengthy contracts, but a simple handshake. A handshake between Professor Lim and Dr. Kwa Soon Bee, then Permanent Secretary of the Minister of Health. A $17 million commitment from the government sealed the deal, transforming two surgical blocks at Singapore General Hospital. The Singapore National Eye Centre’s story is also one of astute observation. In 2006, ophthalmologists at SNEC were the first to describe a link between fungal keratitis and a specific brand of contact lens cleaner. Their bold report, despite potential risks to their reputation, ultimately alerted the world to a significant health concern. Today, the Singapore National Eye Centre performs an astounding 14,000 major eye surgeries and 13,000 laser procedures every year. The SNEC also participates in clinical trials. They research the causes and treatments of various eye conditions. These conditions include myopia and glaucoma. The Singapore National Eye Centre is more than just a hospital. It’s a place where hope is restored, where vision is enhanced, and where the future of eye care is constantly being shaped.
