Picture the bustling heart of Singapore’s financial district. Raffles Place stands before you. This isn’t just a place it’s a living testament to Singapore’s rise. It began humbly in the 1820s as Commercial Square. Sir Stamford Raffles envisioned a “great commercial emporium”. His plan transformed swampy land into a thriving hub. A small hill was leveled. Its soil reclaimed marshland creating Boat Quay and Circular Road. Commercial Square became a vibrant open space. Two and four-storey buildings sprung up. Mercantile offices banks and financial companies filled them.

Land auctions boomed. Plots sold for $1200 and $1500. Businesses flocked to this strategic location on the Singapore River. In 1858 Commercial Square was renamed Raffles Place honoring its visionary founder. The south side boasted godowns with jetties. Cargo was loaded directly onto boats. This area was at the edge of the sea then.

The 19th century saw renowned retail stores flourish here. John Little Singapore’s oldest department store opened in 1842. Robinsons another department store started in 1858. Whiteaway Laidlaw initially set up on D’Almeida Street before relocating to Raffles Place. The Alkaff Arcade Singapore’s first indoor shopping arcade opened in 1909. These stores catered to a growing population.

Early banks were established. The Oriental Bank the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India London and China the Chartered Bank of India Australia and China and the Asiatic Banking Corporation all found homes here. The early 20th century saw explosive banking growth. Local banks emerged competing with established giants. The 1950s brought more international banks like Bank of America and Bank of China.

World War II interrupted this growth. Raffles Place suffered bombing raids in 1941. The Japanese occupation slowed but didn’t stop the area’s evolution. The 1960s and 70s saw a shift. Retailers moved to Orchard Road and other areas. Finance houses and major banks took their place. Robinsons’ landmark building sadly burned down in 1972. The fire was devastating claiming nine lives.

Singapore’s first underground car park was built in 1965 under Raffles Place. It was replaced by the Raffles Place MRT station which opened in 1987. The station entrance features details from the 1911 John Little building facade. Today skyscrapers dominate the skyline. Many of Singapore’s tallest buildings are found here. Flagship banks and major financial institutions reside here. Raffles Place remains the undisputed heart of Singapore’s financial district a symbol of its incredible journey.
