On this very spot, amidst the modern cityscape of Singapore, stands CHIJMES, a place where history whispers from ancient walls. CHIJMES, pronounced “chimes,” isn’t just a collection of beautifully restored buildings. It’s a time capsule, holding within its embrace centuries of stories, laughter, tears, and unwavering faith. CHIJMES began as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ), a Catholic convent established in 1854. The oldest structure on the grounds, Caldwell House, dates back even further, to 1840. Imagine the vibrant life that unfolded here, starting with just four French nuns led by Mother Mathilde Raclot.
The nuns quickly established a school for girls, welcoming both fee-paying students and orphans. Can you picture the hallways filled with the rustle of habits and the murmur of young voices reciting their lessons? The original chapel, built in 1855, eventually fell into disrepair, making way for the magnificent Gothic Revival chapel we see today, CHIJMES Hall. Completed in 1903, its stunning stained-glass windows, imported from Belgium, still cast colorful patterns across the floor. Each of the 648 capitals on the columns boasts a unique design, showcasing the beauty of tropical flora and birds. This chapel, a testament to faith and architectural brilliance, served as the spiritual heart of CHIJMES.
But CHIJMES wasn’t immune to the trials of history. During World War II, bombs fell upon the complex, tragically destroying the orphanage. Following the war, the school continued to evolve, adding new buildings and adapting to the changing needs of Singapore. St. Nicholas Girls’ School, established in 1933 within the former Hotel Van Wijk, became a part of the CHIJMES family. By the 1980s, however, the government acquired the land, and the schools relocated. CHIJMES then entered a new phase of its existence.
After extensive restoration, CHIJMES reopened in 1996, transformed into the vibrant lifestyle destination we know and love. The former chapel, now CHIJMES Hall, hosts weddings and corporate events, its soaring arches and ethereal light creating a magical atmosphere. Caldwell House, also a popular wedding venue, whispers tales of the convent’s early days. As you wander through CHIJMES, pause for a moment.
