Across the Singapore River stands Elgin Bridge a testament to Singapore’s rich history. Built in 1929 it replaced an earlier iron bridge itself a successor to wooden footbridges. The current Elgin Bridge is a beautiful concrete structure. It’s a vehicular box girder bridge connecting the Downtown Core to the Singapore River Planning Area.

This wasn’t always a concrete bridge though. The first bridge here was a simple wooden footbridge. Built in 1822 it was known as Presentment Bridge or Jackson’s Bridge. It was also nicknamed Monkey Bridge a playful name reflecting its humble design.

This original bridge was replaced in 1844 by Thomson’s Bridge another wooden structure. Then in 1862 an iron bridge arrived replacing Thomson’s. This iron bridge was a significant upgrade. It was named Elgin Bridge after James Bruce the 8th Earl of Elgin a colonial administrator. He served as Governor-General of both Canada and India.

The iron Elgin Bridge proved inadequate by the 1920s. The growing city needed a sturdier structure. The current bridge was thus constructed between 1925 and 1929. This concrete Elgin Bridge stands as a symbol of progress and enduring design.

Notice the elegant cast iron lamps. They’re not just pretty they’re works of art. Italian sculptor Cavaliere Rudolfo Nolli designed them. Look closely you can even see his signature etched beneath. Beneath the lamps are bronze plaques. Each depicts a lion standing proudly before a royal palm tree.

Elgin Bridge is more than just a way to cross the river. It’s a national monument. It represents Singapore’s evolution from a small settlement to a modern metropolis. It links North Bridge Road and South Bridge Road reflecting its crucial role in the city’s development. Its story is interwoven with Singapore’s own. It’s a bridge to the past a pathway to the future. And it stands here for all to appreciate.
