Originally named Boh Beh Kang. Alexandra Canal was known as the No Tail River in Hokkien. Alexandra Canal whispers tales of transformation. This 1.2-kilometer canal stretches from Tanglin Road to Delta Road. It is more than just a concrete waterway. Alexandra Canal embodies Singapore’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Alexandra Canal is one of the upper reaches of the Singapore River. It joins Sungei Pandan. The canal becomes the Singapore River after Kim Seng Bridge. Reconstruction efforts from 1997 to 2008 improved the canal’s structure. They aimed to alleviate flooding in the area. In 2011, another stretch was rebuilt between Zion Road and Kim Seng Road for better drainage.
Imagine a time when Alexandra Canal was simply a stream. It fed both the Singapore River and Sungei Pandan. This unique stream lacked an apparent source. Locals called it “No Tail River.”
Today, Alexandra Canal has multiple water sources. Streams, drains and underground canals feed it. The canal flows into the Singapore River. The original source of the Singapore River was likely the Alexandra stream. It originated between the Sungei Ulu Pandan Canal system and the Alexandra Canal system.
A 200-meter stretch near Tanglin Road was decked over. A water cascade and play area were created. From here, visitors can enjoy views of the waterway downstream.
The Educational Hut provides information about water-related topics. Students from Crescent Girls’ School developed the panels. These panels highlight the importance of keeping our waterways clean.
Wetland systems and plants are key features of Alexandra Canal. Water is pumped from the canal into these wetlands. Sediments and impurities are removed by plants and filter media. The treated water flows to a rockscape garden. It then returns to the canal. Eventually, it ends up in Marina Reservoir. These wetland plants beautify the landscape. They also serve as a natural habitat for fishes and dragonflies.
Rain gardens channel rainwater from nearby areas into the canal. The plants and soil filter impurities. Clean water flows into Alexandra Canal. It eventually reaches Marina Reservoir. Bioretention swales filter and channel rainwater. They use plants and soil layers to sieve out impurities.
Students actively participate in maintaining Alexandra Canal. They engage in wetland planting. These activities promote the Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters Programme. Crescent Girls’ School created a wireless learning trail for students. They also trained student facilitators to conduct tours.
