Piercing the sky at 8.6 meters tall, the Merlion Guardian Statue stands majestically. It embodies Singapore’s spirit. This iconic statue is a testament to Singapore’s cultural history. It merges seamlessly with its maritime roots. The Merlion’s lion head represents the lion Prince Sang Nila Utama saw. He rediscovered Singapura or Lion City in 11 AD. The fish body symbolizes Singapore’s origins as a fishing village. Thus, the name Merlion blends “Mer” for sea and “lion.”

Craftsman Lim Nang Seng built the original Merlion statue. It was unveiled by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 1972. The statue stood at the mouth of the Singapore River. In 1997, the Esplanade Bridge blocked views of the Merlion Guardian Statue. So, in 2002, it moved 120 meters to Merlion Park.

Standing here, you can see the Merlion spouting water into the bay. It is dramatically lit at night. The Merlion Guardian Statue is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. Locals believe a visit brings joy and positive energy.

There is also a Merlion cub sculpture here. It stands at 2 meters tall. The cub represents Singapore’s youthful spirit. Together, they create a scenic backdrop against the Marina Bay skyline.

Did you know there are actually seven Merlions in Singapore? Besides the two statues at Merlion Park, others stand at Mount Faber and the STB headquarters. Two more are in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. One Merlion even resided in a pop-up hotel. Artist Tatzu Nishi designed it for the Singapore Biennale in 2011.

The Merlion’s popularity extends overseas. In Hakodate, Japan, a Merlion stands as a symbol of friendship. It watches over ships at the port of Hakodate.
