Affectionately known as the “Loving and Affectionate Mosque,” Masjid Al-Mawaddah stands before us. Masjid Al-Mawaddah isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub woven into the fabric of the Sengkang community. Opened on May 21, 2009, Masjid Al-Mawaddah was built to serve the growing number of young families in the Buangkok and Sengkang area. Its construction, part of the Mosque Building Fund program’s Phase 4, cost a substantial $10.5 million. The name “Al-Mawaddah,” bestowed by the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, is deeply meaningful. Derived from the Arabic word for “affectionate,” it reflects a verse from the Quran (Surah Ar-Rum, verse 21), speaking of love and mercy between hearts. Masjid Al-Mawaddah embraces families, offering features for all ages. It also champions sustainability. The mosque’s environmentally friendly design has earned it the Greenmark Certification, a testament to its energy-conserving features. During peak times, Masjid Al-Mawaddah can accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers. In 2017, the mosque faced a public controversy following a newspaper column by its executive Imam, Ustaz Mohammad Zaid Isahak. The article, addressing marital disputes, sparked outrage and debate about interpretations of Islamic teachings on spousal relations. The incident highlighted the complex intersection of faith, culture, and modern societal values. Masjid Al-Mawaddah continues to serve as a vital community center. It offers Islamic learning programs, social development initiatives, and family and youth development activities. The mosque fosters community bonding through various programs and facilities. It aims to create a welcoming space for families and people of all ages. Conveniently located near Buangkok MRT station, Masjid Al-Mawaddah is easily accessible to residents of Sengkang, Hougang, and Punggol. It stands as a symbol of love, affection, and community, inviting all to find peace and connection within its walls.
