The Church of St Alphonsus opened its doors in 1950. It wasn’t built overnight. The Redemptorists a Catholic order dedicated to serving the poor established a small chapel in 1935. They began holding Saturday novenas in 1949. These nine-day prayer sessions quickly grew in popularity. Word spread. Soon thousands attended. The name Novena itself Latin for nine became synonymous with this place of worship. The surrounding area took on the name Novena. The church’s fame spread far beyond Singapore.

The original church building was quite modest. It had a simple facade with three arches and a circular stained glass window. But as the crowds grew larger additions were made. Porticoes were added in the late 1950s to accommodate the throngs of devotees. The side walls were later removed for better access. Eventually the church needed more renovations. It closed for three years for a complete makeover. It reopened in 2017 a testament to the enduring faith of its community. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith.

The Church of St Alphonsus wasn’t just about prayer. It became a hub of community. An annual procession started in 1953 in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This event draws tens of thousands of people from all backgrounds. In 1970 alone 30000 devotees attended. The Novena Church is a place of immense spiritual significance. A place of hope healing and unwavering faith.
