Gazing at Sultan Shoal Lighthouse, one can almost hear the whispers of the sea. This isn’t just a lighthouse. It’s a sentinel, a silent witness to over a century of maritime history. Sultan Shoal Lighthouse, built in 1895, stands as a testament to Singapore’s vital role in global shipping. It replaced a simpler beacon, marking the treacherous Sultan Shoal, a navigational hazard near the western entrance to the Singapore Strait. The shoal itself earned its name from the grounding of a ship in 1789. Initially, the lighthouse, with its distinctive two-story dwelling encircling the base, seemed to rise straight from the sea. This “stilt-supported bungalow,” as it’s been called, housed the keeper and a lascar, storing vital supplies and fresh water. The original light, powered by kerosene lamps and reflectors, flashed every 30 seconds, its beam reaching 22 nautical miles. Two rifles, complete with bayonets, were kept on hand, a stark reminder of the threat of pirate attacks in those isolated waters. The surrounding waters, once open sea, have dramatically changed. Land reclamation in the 1970s gave the lighthouse a solid island foundation. A holiday bungalow was even added for officials. Later reclamation projects, expanding Jurong Island and the Tuas port facilities, have now brought the lighthouse within close proximity of land. Sultan Shoal Lighthouse, equipped with a modern rotating beacon and radar, now casts a light visible for 20 nautical miles. It continues to serve its purpose, guiding ships through one of the world’s busiest waterways, a steadfast beacon amid the constant hum of progress.
