Imagine footprints hardened in volcanic ash. These prints tell tales of Maori and their dogs on Motutapu Island. This island holds layers of stories, from ancient settlements to modern restoration.

Motutapu Island. Its Maori name means sacred island. It sits in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. The island is next to Rangitoto. Motutapu is older and different geologically.

Long ago Motutapu was connected to the North Island. Rising sea levels made it an island. Maori lived here for over 100 years. Then Rangitoto erupted around 700 years ago. Ash covered Motutapu. Some residents may have escaped by canoe.

Archaeologists found footprints preserved in ash. These prints are at the Sunde Site. A layer of ash protected them from erosion.

Motutapu’s full Maori name is Te Motutapu a Taikehu. It means the sacred island of Taikehu. Taikehu was a priest of the Tainui tribe.

Motutapu has over 300 recorded archaeological sites. These include villages and fortifications. There are also kumara storage pits and gardens. Middens show where people discarded food.

After Maori, Europeans farmed Motutapu. Farming began around 1840. Settlers built homesteads at Emu Bay and Home Bay. They planted Norfolk pines. These trees still mark farm sites.

Robert Graham introduced deer and wallabies in the 1860s. He wanted to attract visitors. Home Bay became a popular picnic spot. In 1903, ten steamers carried 14000 people here.

During World War II, Motutapu became a military base. Defenses protected Auckland Harbour. Military camps and underground ammunition stores were built. Guns and anti-aircraft installations stood ready.

Today, you can still see concrete emplacements. These are reminders of the war. The military barracks now serve as an outdoor education camp.

Since 1992, there has been a community project to restore Motutapu. Volunteers have planted over 450000 native trees. The island became pest-free in 2011. Rare birds like kiwi and takahe thrive here now.

Motutapu Island is a taonga. That means treasure. It protects natural and cultural heritage. The island offers people a chance to connect with nature. It is a place to understand its rich past.

As you leave Motutapu consider its layers. Maori history. European farming. Military defense. Ecological restoration. Motutapu is a testament to time. It’s a story written in ash and trees.
