Amidst the vibrant energy of Auckland’s North Shore, Takapuna Grammar School stands proudly. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where “Through endeavour to greatness” isn’t just a motto, it’s a way of life. Takapuna Grammar School opened its doors in 1927. It was a pioneering institution, the first co-educational school under the Auckland Grammar School’s Board. This legacy continues to shape the school today. Takapuna Grammar School carries the Auckland Grammar Lion and the motto “Per Angusta Ad Augusta.” This translates to “Through endeavour to greatness.” The school established its own Board of Governors in 1955, marking a significant step in its independent journey. Imagine walking the halls where over two thousand students, from years 9 to 13, pursue their dreams. The school serves Takapuna and the entire Devonport Peninsula. It’s a diverse community, with a mix of local and international students. In 2011, the student body represented a vibrant tapestry of cultures. New Zealand European, British, Irish, Māori, Korean, and Chinese heritages were all present. Takapuna Grammar School has seen significant transformations throughout the years. In the 2000s, a $6.4 million upgrade project brought new life to the campus. A new library, social science classrooms, and student support centers were added. This modernization continued with a $26 million redevelopment of the main block, completed in 2020. This project, one of the most expensive in New Zealand’s history, breathed new life into the original 1927 building. The school also boasts a modern science block, completed in 2016. Takapuna Grammar School offers a comprehensive curriculum based on The New Zealand Curriculum. Students in Year 11 undertake the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 1. In Years 12 and 13, they can choose between continuing with NCEA or pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Takapuna Grammar School was the first state school in New Zealand to offer the IB qualification. Beyond academics, Takapuna Grammar School fosters a vibrant extracurricular scene. From sports and music to arts and culture, there are opportunities for every student to explore their passions. This holistic approach to education is reflected in the school’s impressive alumni list. Names like Sir Peter Blake (yachtsman), Lorde (singer-songwriter), and Stephen Tindall (entrepreneur) grace this list, showcasing the diverse talents nurtured within these walls. Takapuna Grammar School continues to inspire generations of students to achieve greatness. Its rich history, modern facilities, and commitment to a well-rounded education make it a true gem on Auckland’s North Shore.
