Glimpse back in time as we approach the Pah Homestead. This grand building stands as a testament to Auckland’s rich history. It is a Category I heritage structure.

The Pah Homestead began its life as a Maori pa. This fortified site was abandoned in the 1700s. William Hart purchased the land in 1844. He built a Regency styled villa there in 1847.

Later, James Williamson bought the property in 1877. He wanted to create a family dynasty. Williamson demolished Hart’s villa. He commissioned the Pah Homestead. It became one of Auckland’s largest and most expensive homes.

The Pah Homestead design drew inspiration from Queen Victoria’s Osborne House. Thomas Mahoney designed this Italianate villa. The Pah featured verandahs and a central tower. This tower offered a 360-degree view of the landscape.

Inside the Pah Homestead, the main rooms showcased high-quality materials. These included plaster ceilings, Italian marble fireplaces and parquet floors. Gillow and Sons supplied the wood panelling and furniture.

Williamson’s dream of a family dynasty was short-lived. The stock market crash of 1886 forced him to sell the Pah Homestead. The property was divided.

Over the years, the Pah Homestead had several owners. It even served as a temporary residence for the homeless. In 2002, the Auckland City Council purchased the Pah Homestead. This purchase was part of a plan to develop Monte Cecilia Park.

The council undertook a restoration project. This project preserved the Pah Homestead’s heritage. The roof was upgraded with English slate tiles. The exterior joinery and facade were refurbished.

Since 2010, the Pah Homestead has been home to the Arts House Trust. This gallery houses a collection of New Zealand art. Visitors can view over 7000 works. Exhibitions are on display free of charge.

The Pah Homestead has also appeared in television and film productions. It featured in “The Quiet Earth” and “The Chronicles of Narnia”. The Pah Homestead offers panoramic views. From here you can see Manukau Harbour, One Tree Hill and the Waitakere Ranges.

Take a moment to appreciate the Pah Homestead’s beauty. Notice the Italian marble fireplaces and parquet floors. Imagine the lavish parties that once took place here. The Pah Homestead stands as a reminder of Auckland’s past. It is a place where history and art come together.
