Marvelous isn’t it? This majestic building before you is the Chartered Bank Building. Or as it’s more recently known Bund 18. Its grandeur whispers tales of Shanghai’s vibrant past.

The Chartered Bank itself was established far away in England in 1853. It received the royal seal of approval from Queen Victoria herself. This building however opened its doors in Shanghai in May 1923. Imagine the ceremony. Sidney Barton the British Consul presiding.

Designed by Tug Wilson it’s a stunning example of neo-classical Greek architecture. But look closely. Notice the subtle details. The lions’ heads on the original lamp brackets. They’re long gone but once symbolized the bank’s British heritage. Floral motifs on the remaining bronze gates. They blend Oriental feels with Greek detailing. Originally carved keystones representing India Australia and China with rams’ heads adorned the ground floor windows.

Inside the entrance vestibule were four Brecchia marble columns. The walls were lined with cream-colored Pavonazzo marble. The floor a Roman marble mosaic. The ceiling of fibrous plaster. Almost everything on the ground floor was shipped all the way from England. Except the woodwork of course. Both the ground floor and the basement housed the bank’s operations.

The building itself rested on two reinforced rafts. One for the main block and one for the back where the treasuries were located. The steel-framed structure. It stood strong over eighty years.

Then in 2004 after a challenging restoration led by Filippo Gabbiani. Bund 18 reopened. It’s now home to luxury boutiques like Cartier and Zegna. The upper floors house a creative center a Chinese restaurant and Sens Sc Bund with its famous rooftop Bar Rouge. The restoration was meticulous. Gabbiani ensured that any additions were clearly distinguishable from the original features.

The Chartered Bank Building stands as a testament to Shanghai’s history. It’s a reminder of the city’s role as a global financial hub. It’s now a symbol of luxury and innovation. A gorgeous building with a compelling story to tell. A place where history blends seamlessly with modern elegance.
