Across the Huangpu River stands Songpu Bridge a testament to human ingenuity. This double-decker marvel wasn’t always known by its current name. Initially called the Huangpu River Bridge it later became Cheting Bridge.

Songpu Bridge holds a special place in Shanghai’s history. It was the first bridge built across the Huangpu River. This was a significant achievement. It connected Chedun Town and Yexie Town in Songjiang District. Before Songpu Bridge people relied on slower methods of river crossing. The bridge dramatically improved transport links. This spurred economic development in the region.

The construction of Songpu Bridge was intricately linked to the Shanghai Jinshan Petrochemical Complex. The need to transport goods to this new industrial area provided the impetus for building the bridge. The lower deck carried a railway line specifically for this purpose. This railway branch line of the Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway served the Jinshan Petrochemical Plant. This industrial plant was a crucial part of China’s growing economy. The upper deck meanwhile accommodated the Cheting Highway. This highway formed part of the crucial 320 National Highway.

The railway line although initially active for both freight and passenger service is now abandoned. The tracks have been removed. Plans exist to repurpose the space into pedestrian and bicycle lanes. Imagine strolling across this historic bridge. You would be enjoying stunning views and experiencing a piece of Shanghai’s industrial past.

For many years Songpu Bridge was the sole bridge spanning the upper Huangpu River. The bridge was truly unique in its time. Motorists even paid a toll to use it. Although the toll was later removed. The bridge underwent a major overhaul in 2007. Improvements included upgrades to the highway. Songpu Bridge remains a vital part of Shanghai’s infrastructure. It continues to facilitate the flow of traffic and people. It connects Songjiang District to the south with the rest of Shanghai. The bridge stands as a silent witness to decades of change and progress. It embodies the spirit of innovation and resilience that defines Shanghai itself.
