Built of brick in the Romanesque style with Gothic elements Saint Joseph’s Church stands proudly in Shanghai’s Huangpu District. Its history stretches back to the 1840s. This is one of three parcels of land given to the Catholic Church. This was compensation for the earlier seizure of Jingyi Church.

Father Louis Hélot oversaw its construction between 1860 and 1861. The church was consecrated in 1862. Imagine the scene the dedication ceremony bustling with activity. People dressed in their finest clothing. The air filled with hymns and prayers.

Saint Joseph’s Church thrived for many years. It became a center of the community. A place of worship and solace for generations of Shanghai residents. However the Cultural Revolution brought a halt to its activities.

The church was closed in 1966. This closure lasted for twenty years. It remained silent during this tumultuous period. Then in 1986 it reopened its doors. The surrounding buildings still housed a primary school. A testament to the church’s enduring presence within the neighborhood.

Today Saint Joseph’s Church continues to serve its community. It remains a significant landmark in Shanghai. A beautiful example of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The church stands as a symbol of faith perseverance. And a reminder of Shanghai’s rich and complex history. Step inside and feel the weight of history surrounding you.
