Towering before us stands Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral. It is a testament to faith and architectural grandeur. This magnificent structure has a rich history intertwined with Shanghai’s cultural evolution. Let’s step closer and uncover the stories etched within its walls.

The Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral, also known as Xujiahui Cathedral. It stands as a beacon of Catholicism in Shanghai. Its story began in 1851 with a modest Greek-style church. As Catholicism flourished, a grander vision took shape.

Designed by William Doyle, the Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral was built by French Jesuits between 1906 and 1910. It was once hailed as the grandest church in the Far East, accommodating 2,500 worshippers. Imagine the awe-inspiring sight of its vast interior filled with people.

The architectural style is French medieval Gothic. Red brick walls rise majestically. White stone pillars add a striking contrast. Gray slate roofs complete the picture. Two bell towers stand tall, reaching 60 meters high. The Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral was once the tallest building in Shanghai.

Inside, altars and stone columns create a sense of reverence. Gothic ceilings soar overhead. Stained glass windows cast colorful patterns. Paintings of the Last Supper and Stations of the Cross adorn the walls.

However, the Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral’s history is not without its dark chapters. During the Cultural Revolution in 1966, Red Guards vandalized the cathedral. They tore down its spires and ceiling. They smashed the stained glass. Priests and nuns were beaten. Bishop Aloysius Zhang Jiashu knelt in prayer until he was dragged away. For ten years, the Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral served as a grain warehouse.

But faith endures. In 1978, the cathedral reopened. The spires were restored in the early 1980s. In 1989, the first Catholic Mass in Mandarin was celebrated here. Wo Ye and Father Thomas Lucas began a project to replace the stained glass windows in 2002. The new windows incorporated Chinese characters and iconography.

An image of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of China was enshrined in 2014. In 2018, an image of Mary Help of Christians was also enshrined.

Today, the Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral welcomes visitors and worshippers alike. You can attend Mass every Sunday morning. Services are held in different languages, reflecting Shanghai’s diverse community. The church is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. Volunteers offer tours every 30 minutes.

The Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral stands as a symbol of resilience and faith. It is a place where art, history, and spirituality converge. As you leave, take a moment to reflect on the stories these walls hold. The Xujiahui Saint Ignatius Catholic Cathedral is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Shanghai’s enduring spirit.
