The Shanghai International Circuit was born from Shanghai’s ambition. The city wanted to showcase itself to the world. What better way than a world-class racetrack? In 2003, construction began in the Jiading District. This location was northwest of the city. The area spanned 5.3 square kilometers. A budget of 2.6 billion yuan funded this ambitious project. That is about $450 million. The Shanghai Jiushi Group managed the build.
Hermann Tilke designed the track. He is a renowned German architect. Building the Shanghai Audi International Circuit was no easy task. The site was swampland. It used to be rice paddy fields. Workers had to perform extensive groundworks. Around 3,000 workers were on-site daily for 18 months. It was a remarkable feat of engineering.
The Shanghai Audi International Circuit opened in 2004. Visitors were greeted by a vast complex. The main grandstand dominated the landscape. It could hold 30,000 spectators. The total capacity of the circuit is 200,000. The paddock facilities are also unique. Each F1 team has its own building. They are arranged like pavilions in a lake. The track layout is inspired by the Chinese character “shang”. “Shang” means “above” or “ascend”. It is the first character in Shanghai’s name. Turns 1 and 2 tighten as drivers enter them. Turns 7 and 8 have super-high g-forces. Drivers love these turns. The circuit includes one of the longest straights. It stretches 1.2 km between turns 13 and 14.
The Shanghai International Circuit is the first in China purpose-built for Formula One. It has hosted the Chinese Grand Prix since 2004. The race was canceled from 2020 to 2023. This was due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The circuit hosts other events. These include the FIA World Endurance Championship.
