Gazing across Māngere Lagoon, can you sense the whispers of its volcanic past? This isn’t your typical Auckland beach with golden sand and crashing waves. Māngere Lagoon offers a different kind of coastal beauty. This tranquil lagoon, part of the Manukau Harbour, rests within a volcanic crater, a silent testament to Auckland’s fiery origins. The surrounding area invites peaceful walks, offering stunning views of the water and the Auckland skyline. Birdwatchers will find themselves captivated by the diverse avian life that calls this area home. Māngere Lagoon’s charm lies in its tranquility, a welcome escape from the city’s hustle. About 7,000 years ago, rising sea levels transformed this volcanic crater into the tidal lagoon you see today. Imagine the transformation, the slow creep of the ocean filling the crater, creating a haven for wildlife and a place of quiet beauty. In the 1930s, there were attempts to drain the lagoon, to transform it into pastureland. Later, in the 1950s, the lagoon was drastically altered. A scoria cone within the lagoon was removed, and the crater itself was divided into ponds for sewage sludge. Thankfully, public demand led to a land-based treatment facility. By 2003, Māngere Lagoon had been restored to its former glory, the sludge removed, the scoria cone rebuilt, even enhanced with a bird roost. The native bush now thrives along the shores, replacing the non-native pine forests that once stood here. Māngere Lagoon is more than just a scenic spot. It’s a testament to the power of nature and the importance of conservation. While it offers few amenities, its raw beauty and tranquil atmosphere offer a unique experience. Remember this story as you gaze upon the serene waters of Māngere Lagoon, a place where Auckland’s volcanic history meets the tranquility of the coast.
