Forty-one million dollars. That’s how much it cost to build this magnificent structure. North Harbour Stadium stands before you a testament to New Zealand’s passion for sport.
Opened on March 8 1997 this impressive venue wasn’t just built overnight. Years of planning and discussion preceded its construction. North Harbour Stadium is more than just a sporting arena. It’s a community hub a place where memories are made.
From its inception North Harbour Stadium has hosted a variety of events. Rugby union is a mainstay of course. The North Harbour Rugby Union team plays its home games here. The Auckland Blues a Super Rugby team occasionally grace the pitch. Football has also found a home here. The New Zealand Knights a former A-League team once called this stadium home.
But it’s not just about the big leagues. North Harbour Stadium also hosts international matches. The stadium hosted matches in the 2002 OFC Nations Cup the 2003 Women’s Rugby League World Cup and the 2010 OFC Women’s Nations Cup. Even the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup finals saw this place bustling with activity. The stadium has also hosted concerts and other entertainment events.
The stadium’s capacity is impressive. While initially holding 25000 it was later modified. Part of the northwestern stand was demolished to accommodate a baseball diamond for the Auckland Tuatara. This reduced its seating capacity to 14000. Despite the reduction the atmosphere remains electric.
Look closely and you’ll spot a media tower. It was built before the 2011 Rugby World Cup. This tower provides exceptional views of the field. It also houses broadcast facilities for commentators and television officials.
North Harbour Stadium wasn’t always known by its current name. From 2014 to 2019 it was known as QBE Stadium thanks to sponsorship from QBE Insurance. The name change reflects the stadium’s adaptability and its role as a modern multi-purpose venue.
Today North Harbour Stadium continues to evolve. In 2024 Auckland FC announced it as its headquarters and training base. In 2025 Moana Pasifika a Super Rugby Pacific team will make it their full-time home ground. This ensures the stadium will remain a vibrant sporting and community center for years to come. A legacy built on passion and performance. North Harbour Stadium.
