Across Denny Way and Minor Avenue North, the Transforest Sculpture rises, a striking blend of nature and industry. The Transforest Sculpture isn’t just a static piece of art. It tells a story, a story of Seattle’s electric history intertwined with the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. This massive sculpture, standing tall at 110 feet, depicts a tree merging with an electrical transmission tower. The artists, Lead Pencil Studio, were inspired by a unique tradition. During the construction of Seattle City Light’s hydroelectric system, a small fir tree was placed atop a transmission tower. This Scandinavian ritual was meant to appease tree-dwelling spirits. This act, blending the natural world with human ingenuity, became the seed for the Transforest Sculpture. Look closely at the tree portion of the sculpture. It represents the colossal Douglas firs that once dominated the Cascade lowlands. These giants could reach heights of 465 feet, almost touching the underside of the Space Needle. Notice the broken top. It symbolizes a snag tree, a tree that continues to live even after its top has broken off. These snags can provide habitat for up to 60% of forest animals.
