A generous gift from afar. That’s how the Idris Mosque’s story begins.

Right here before us stands this magnificent structure. It’s more than just a building it’s a beacon of faith a testament to generosity. The Idris Mosque in Seattle’s Northgate neighborhood wasn’t always here. Its story starts in 1981 a year that marked its establishment. It’s significant because it’s the first mosque west of the Mississippi River designed in an Arabesque style.

Sheikh Abdul Kadir Idriss of Saudi Arabia gifted the land and funding. His daughter and son-in-law oversaw the design and construction. Adnan Idriss and Sister Ameerah ensured the mosque’s vision came to life. The architect Dennis Alkire of Mithun Associates masterfully blended architectural styles. The result a unique blend of tradition and modernity.

Building the mosque wasn’t without its challenges. Community opposition arose. Legal battles ensued. Despite this the community persevered. The community’s dedication created a beautiful space for worship. The mosque’s design is captivating. A large octagonal copper dome tops the prayer hall. The minaret also boasts a copper dome crowned with a crescent. The exterior showcases buff-colored brick accented with red brick. Large glass block windows shaped like Moorish arches let in abundant light.

The entrance is breathtaking. Brass and copper double doors welcome visitors. Celadon green tiles surround them. Inside there is a sense of peace and serenity. This is a place where thousands of worshippers and visitors gather each year. This is a place for everyone regardless of creed ethnicity race culture or background.

The Idris Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It offers services and activities for Muslims and non-Muslims. It serves as a media relations center. It shares Islamic knowledge with the local and national community. The mosque’s mission is to foster understanding. It seeks to create competent ambassadors for Islam. It strives to build positive relationships within the diverse community. The Idris Mosque is a true gift. It’s a blessing to Seattle and the Northwest. It’s a shining example of religious tolerance and community building. A testament to the enduring power of faith and generosity.
