Had Seattle’s horses ever dreamt of becoming firefighters? Probably not. But at Historic Ballard Fire Station No. 18, they were the original heroes. Built in 1911 by Bebb and Mendel, this striking red brick building, with its stepped gables and overhanging eaves, housed not just brave men, but also their four-legged partners. Historic Ballard Fire Station No. 18 served the Ballard neighborhood for an impressive 63 years, longer than any other fire station in Seattle. Originally designed for horse-drawn fire engines, the station’s early sophisticated engineering is still evident today. Imagine the clang of the alarm, the thunder of hooves on the cobblestone as the horses charged out, pulling their engines towards the blaze. This station stood witness to countless emergencies, a silent guardian of the community. Historic Ballard Fire Station No. 18 was more than just a building; it was the heart of Ballard’s safety net. After its retirement in 1976, the city declared it surplus property. Thankfully, Historic Seattle stepped in, acquiring and renovating the station, ensuring its legacy lived on. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Seattle Landmark, Historic Ballard Fire Station No. 18 has been beautifully adapted for modern use. Now a restaurant and office space, it still retains the charm of its heroic past. The vibrant red brick, a testament to its resilience, continues to draw the eye. Historic Ballard Fire Station No. 18 serves as a reminder of a time when horses and humans worked side by side, protecting the community they called home.
