A bronze horseman. That’s what first catches your eye at the Otahuhu First World War Memorial. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a powerful tribute. A gift from a local resident Alfred Trevwith. He wanted to honor the sacrifices of New Zealanders in the Great War.

The Otahuhu First World War Memorial stands proudly. It’s a poignant reminder of a conflict that touched lives worldwide. It’s more than just a monument. It’s a symbol of remembrance. A place of reflection for the people of Otahuhu and beyond.

The story begins in 1928. Thirteen years after the ANZAC landings. A grand procession wound its way through Otahuhu. Returned soldiers cadets and schoolchildren marched. They followed the 3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles Band. Their destination The Otahuhu First World War Memorial.

The unveiling was a significant event. Governor-General Sir Charles Fergusson and Lady Alice Fergusson were present. The Mayor of Otahuhu Mr J Todd also attended. Mr and Mrs Alfred Trevwith were there too. They witnessed the unveiling of the impressive bronze statue. It depicted a New Zealand Mounted Rifleman. The horse seemed startled by shellfire.

The statue itself has a fascinating history. It was sculpted and cast in England. The soldier’s uniform was based on that of a member of the 3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles band. Mr Ivan Kelly’s uniform was sent to England as a model. Trevwith intended to remain anonymous. However his name was inadvertently revealed in England.

The statue’s journey to New Zealand wasn’t without drama. Trevwith’s solicitors intervened. They ensured its immediate erection. They feared that prolonged storage would damage the delicate bronze.

Sir Charles Fergusson’s speech at the unveiling was memorable. He spoke about the importance of war memorials. They were reminders of sacrifices made. He emphasized the responsibility of every citizen to answer the call of duty. He didn’t dwell on sorrow. Instead he focused on the glory of those who fell. Their heroism and the inspiration they provided for future generations.

The ceremony concluded with the Last Post. The Governor-General inspected a guard of honor. He shook hands with each soldier expressing his pleasure at meeting old comrades. The Otahuhu First World War Memorial stands today. A testament to courage sacrifice and the enduring spirit of remembrance. A powerful legacy for future generations.
