Built in 1949 Saint Benedict the Moor Church stands tall. It’s the oldest African American Catholic church in Georgia. A beacon of faith for generations. This hallowed place has witnessed countless acts of devotion. It’s also a testament to the resilience of a community.

The story of Saint Benedict the Moor Church begins long before 1949. In 1874 two Benedictine priests arrived. Their mission was to serve Savannah’s African American community. They built a small church. It stood just four blocks from the current location. Yellow fever struck Savannah in 1876. One priest died. The Benedictines eventually left.

The parish persevered. In 1888 the diocese bought land. A new church was built in 1889. This church became the center of Black Catholic life in Savannah. It served as a ‘Mother Church’. The Society of African Missions staffed the parish from 1907 to 1968. Franciscan Sisters ran St Benedict’s day school. It operated from 1907 until 1969. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was a student there. The sisters also ran an orphanage. Mother Matilda Beasley founded it. She was Georgia’s first African American nun.

The current church replaced the 1889 building. It stands as a symbol of faith. The building stands strong. It endured the test of time. The history is rich. It echoes within these walls. The church has served as a refuge. It also has been a place of celebration for the community. It has played a vital role in Savannah’s history. The legacy continues. Saint Benedict the Moor Church stands proud. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community strength.
