The original church stood on Franklin Square. However in 1833 it moved to its current location on Bull Street. Architect Elias Carter designed the stunning Greek Revival structure completed in 1833. The building underwent significant renovations in the 1920s. The cupola was removed. The facade was redesigned with six stately columns replacing the original two.

Despite these changes the First Baptist Church retains its iconic status. Its gabled portico and two-story columns are hallmarks of the Greek Revival style. The church has undergone further repairs in 1966 1990 and 1999 ensuring its preservation.

Remarkably First Baptist Church remained open throughout the Civil War. Initially its congregation consisted mostly of Confederate soldiers. However after Savannah’s surrender Union soldiers filled the pews the following Sunday. This continuous service exemplifies the church’s unwavering dedication.
