Dedicated to Georgia’s fallen heroes, Memorial Stadium in Savannah has witnessed a fascinating blend of local history and sporting triumphs. Memorial Stadium first opened its gates in 1957. Originally, it boasted a seating capacity of 15,000. Imagine the roar of the crowd during those early football games under the Friday night lights. Savannah State University called Memorial Stadium home from its opening until 1968. High school teams from Chatham County also took to the field, their rivalries playing out on the hallowed ground. Even Benedictine Military School competed here until 2011, adding a unique dimension to the stadium’s legacy. In 2018, Memorial Stadium underwent a significant modernization. This renovation not only revitalized the facility but also reduced its capacity to 5,000, creating a more intimate atmosphere. The stadium reopened in September 2018, ready for a new chapter. Today, Memorial Stadium continues to host high school football games, keeping the tradition alive. But the story doesn’t end there. The stadium has also embraced soccer, becoming the home field for Savannah Clovers FC. From football rivalries to the fast-paced action of soccer, Memorial Stadium in Savannah remains a vibrant hub for sports and community, honoring the memory of those it was built to commemorate.
