Did you know the Georgia Hussars were founded way back in 1736? Right here in Savannah General James Oglethorpe formed this cavalry unit. Their original mission was to protect the fledgling colony. They patrolled the outskirts safeguarding against Spanish incursions and Native American tribes. The Georgia Hussars weren’t just about protecting Savannah. Their history is woven into the fabric of America’s wars. They bravely fought at the Battle of Bloody Marsh in 1742. They also served during the Siege of Savannah in 1779. Their service extended far beyond Georgia’s borders.
The Georgia Hussars played a significant role in the American Civil War. They were part of the Confederate States Army. They participated in the first major act of rebellion in Georgia. This was the taking of Fort Pulaski. They fought in many battles across South Carolina and Georgia. They were part of General Joseph Wheeler’s Army of Tennessee. They battled at Kennesaw Mountain Buckhead Big Shanty and Decatur. Their last documented skirmish was the Battle of Morrisville Station in April 1865.
After the Civil War the Hussars faced a temporary setback. An Act of Congress disbanded Southern militias. Yet their spirit remained strong. They formed the Savannah Sabre Club. This civilian organization kept the Hussars’ traditions alive. They held parades competitions and social events. When military service was allowed again the Sabre Club members rejoined the ranks.
The Georgia Hussars served on the Mexican border in 1916. They then saw brief service in World War I as part of the Dixie Division. They were stationed at Camp Wheeler in August 1917. They went overseas in September 1918 but arrived too late for major combat. They returned home in January 1919. Their legacy continued through World War II and beyond. Future Governor Marvin Griffin even served as their battalion commander during that period.
Today the Georgia Hussars are still active. They are part of the 108th Cavalry of the Georgia National Guard. They have continued their service into the War on Terror supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They trained Afghan security forces conducting counter-insurgency operations. The Georgia Hussars a testament to enduring courage and dedication. They represent Savannah’s contribution to American military history. Their story is one of perseverance service and unwavering commitment to their state and nation.
