The ghosts of cannons still echo here. Right before you stands Montieth Plantation. A place where history whispers secrets of courage and loss.

Imagine the year is 1864. The air hangs heavy with the scent of pine and damp earth. Montieth Plantation sits nestled amongst the swamps. It is home to Colonel George Paul Harrison a prominent rice planter and a Brigadier General in the Georgia Militia. He commanded the First Brigade of the Georgia State Troops. He was also a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

As Sherman’s army marched towards Savannah Montieth became a strategic point. Confederate soldiers under Colonel Jones set up defenses nearby at Monteith Swamp. Their task was to slow Sherman’s advance. They had to protect the vital railway bridge to Charleston. This bridge was the last supply line for the Confederate Army. Losing it meant Savannah was effectively under siege.

The battle raged for hours. Confederate soldiers fought bravely against overwhelming odds. They held their ground. They slowed the Union advance. They inflicted some casualties on the enemy. But they were outnumbered.

Sadly the Confederates eventually retreated. They were forced to abandon their positions. Sherman’s troops took the railroad. Savannah fell. Montieth Plantation was not spared. Sherman’s men pillaged the property. They left Colonel Harrison’s home in ruins. He himself was captured. He was held as a prisoner of war.

Later Colonel Harrison returned to Savannah. He served as a state representative and court clerk. He never forgot the battle at Monteith. He never forgot the devastation of his plantation.

Today we stand on the land where Montieth Plantation once stood. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made during the Civil War. Let us honor the memory of those who fought here. Let us preserve this site. Let us never forget.
