James Oglethorpe attempted to establish a settlement on Skidaway in the 1730s. He sent five families and six single men to build a fort. Farming proved unsuccessful though. The infertile soil forced the pioneers to abandon their efforts. Later attempts at settlement saw a degree of success. John Milledge established Modena Plantation. His son John Jr rose to prominence as a governor and senator. He even helped found the University of Georgia.

The island played a role in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. A small skirmish took place during the Revolution. Earthen batteries were built during the Civil War to defend against Union attacks. The 4th Georgia Battery was stationed here. The Union blockade ultimately led to the island’s abandonment.

Skidaway faced further hardship. After the Civil War black freedmen tried to establish a life on the island. They received assistance from the Freedman’s Bureau and Benedictine monks. A tidal wave devastated the freshwater supply. Farming again proved impossible. Prohibition saw Skidaway become a haven for bootleggers its isolation providing ideal cover.

The 20th century brought industrial development. Union Camp Corporation gained control. They initially focused on pulpwood production. Eventually they shifted to residential development. The company donated land which became Skidaway Island State Park. A bridge built in 1971 finally connected the island to Savannah. The Landings a large gated community grew. This transformed the landscape forever.

Today Skidaway Island offers a blend of natural beauty and modern amenities. Skidaway Island State Park boasts nature trails a visitor center and abundant wildlife. The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography conducts vital research. The island continues to evolve a testament to its enduring spirit.
