Whispers of innovation. That’s how the story of Dolby Laboratories begins, right here in San Francisco. In 1965, Ray Dolby, a visionary in audio technology, founded Dolby Laboratories in London. He later moved the headquarters to San Francisco in 1976. Dolby Laboratories quickly became synonymous with enhancing the way we experience sound. Initially focused on noise reduction, Dolby’s first product, the Dolby 301 unit featuring Type A noise reduction, revolutionized professional recording studios. Dolby A was a game-changer. It targeted the persistent hiss that plagued analog recordings, especially on reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes. Later, at the urging of audio pioneer Henry Kloss, Dolby developed Type B noise reduction in 1968. This consumer-friendly version, designed specifically for cassette tapes, cemented Dolby’s presence in homes worldwide. Think about the impact. Virtually all pre-recorded cassettes by the 1980s utilized Dolby B, transforming how we listened to music. Dolby Laboratories didn’t stop at music. The film industry beckoned. Stanley Kubrick, renowned for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, sought Dolby’s expertise for “A Clockwork Orange” in 1971. This collaboration marked Dolby’s foray into cinema. Although the initial release used a conventional soundtrack, the pre-mixes and masters benefited from Dolby’s noise reduction technology. The first film with a fully Dolby-encoded optical soundtrack was “Callan” in 1974, setting the stage for a revolution in film audio. Dolby Stereo, introduced in 1975, elevated the cinematic experience further. By incorporating noise reduction and multiple audio channels, Dolby Stereo created a richer, more immersive soundscape in theaters. Less than a decade later, thousands of cinemas worldwide had embraced this technology. Dolby Laboratories continued its innovation streak with Dolby Stereo Digital (now known as Dolby Digital) in 1992. This digital surround sound technology debuted with “Batman Returns.” Although its adoption in home theaters faced early hurdles due to hardware requirements, it became a cornerstone of the DVD specification. Dolby Digital is now ubiquitous, integrated into HDTV standards, DVD players, and countless cable and satellite TV receivers.
