Saybrook University started as the Humanistic Psychology Institute in 1971. Eleanor Camp Criswell, Rollo May, Clark Moustakas, and James Bugental were its founders. The name Saybrook comes from a 1964 conference in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Psychologists wanted to create a school embodying human growth values. They aimed to educate practitioners in human-centered psychotherapy.
Initially affiliated with California State University Sonoma. Saybrook later became independent. Thomas Louis Hanna and Eleanor Criswell led the school. They offered graduate courses in humanistic psychology. In the 1970s, Saybrook moved to the Burr Mansion in San Francisco. It was later renamed Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center. The institution officially became Saybrook University in 2009.
In 2014, Saybrook affiliated with The Community Solution Education System. This system provided administrative and financial services. This allowed Saybrook to focus on teaching and research. Today, the administrative offices are in Pasadena, California.
Saybrook University aims to inspire transformational change. It seeks to create a just and sustainable world. The university offers programs in various fields. These include Psychology, Leadership and Management, and Integrative Wellness Coaching. Saybrook also offers programs in Transformative Social Change and Integrative and Functional Nutrition.
Saybrook University has several colleges. These colleges award Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The College of Social Sciences houses departments. These departments include Humanistic and Clinical Psychology, Counseling, and Leadership and Management. The College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences includes departments. These include Integrative Wellness Coaching and Mind-Body Medicine.
The university is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. Saybrookâs M.A. in counseling is accredited. It is accredited by The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.
Saybrook University has grown significantly since its founding. It started with one program. Now, it offers nearly 30 programs with almost 1,000 students. These programs span various disciplines. These include business, psychology, and integrative health.
