Crumbling concrete whispers stories. This is Battery Wagner. Right here before you stands a relic of San Francisco’s coastal defenses.

Battery Wagner was once part of Fort Winfield Scott. It played a vital role protecting the city and the bay. Initially known as Battery Howe it was built in 1895. It boasted sixteen 12-inch mortars. Each mortar had a range of approximately eight miles. Imagine the power. The sheer force of these weapons.

In 1902 the battery was split. The eastern pits kept the Howe name. The western pits were renamed Battery Wagner. This unusual cross-shaped design is known as an Abbott Cross. It allowed a 360-degree field of fire. Unlike other linear mortar batteries in the area. It could target both sea and land.

Battery Wagner was named after Colonel Arthur L Wagner. He was a military secretary who served with distinction in the Spanish-American War. He even authored military textbooks. Colonel Howe a veteran of the Mexican-American and Civil Wars also has a battery named in his honor. The division into two batteries honored both these important military figures.

The mortars were impressive pieces of engineering. Each mortar weighed a staggering 29120 pounds. They fired 1046-pound shells. The carriages themselves were equally impressive weighing 128000 pounds each. Construction was quite an undertaking. It involved moving tons of earth. The massive concrete structure took years to build. They even had to irrigate the planted grass to ensure it took root in San Francisco’s dry climate.

The battery’s magazines held thousands of shells and tons of powder. This was a heavily armed defense. They even employed an ingenious overhead trolley system. To transport shells and powder to the firing pits. This fascinating network of passageways and rooms allowed for efficient and safe operation.

Today much of Battery Wagner is buried. Under an artificial hill. Only a portion of one pit remains visible. Heavy brush covers the area. Access is restricted. But the remnants offer a glimpse into a forgotten past. Into a time when mighty mortars defended San Francisco Bay.
