Wander back to 1873. Battery West was completed that year. It was armed with twelve 15-inch Rodman cannon. The Civil War spurred Battery West’s creation. Advances in artillery showed that masonry forts couldn’t withstand heavy bombardment. Earthwork batteries began replacing brick and mortar forts.

Battery West represents this shift in seacoast defense. It stood on the coastal bluffs behind Fort Point. Battery East soon followed. A covered path connected Battery East and West. Imagine soldiers walking between the batteries ready to defend the city.

The late 1890s brought big changes. Endicott-period batteries were constructed at the Presidio. Sadly Battery West was almost completely destroyed during this time. Only remnants remain today.

But let’s focus on what’s left. You can still visit the earthen wall of Battery West. Also a gunpowder magazine remains. Picture the original battery. It dominated this landscape. It bristled with heavy guns.

Battery West played a crucial role in San Francisco’s defense. It reflected a new approach to coastal fortifications. Though largely dismantled Battery West reminds us of the city’s military past. Its ruins offer a glimpse into a time of innovation and change.

While Battery West was being dismantled Battery East remained partially intact. The earthen works built to protect the large Rodman guns are still visible at Battery East. Brick-lined magazines used to store ammunition are also there. These batteries worked together.

Take a moment to appreciate the strategic location of Battery West. Even in ruins it commands impressive views. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco Bay stretches out before you. Downtown San Francisco glistens in the distance.

Battery West may be a shadow of its former self. But its story still echoes through the Presidio. It embodies a pivotal moment in military history. The transition from old-style forts to earthwork batteries. Remember Battery West as you explore the area. It’s a reminder of San Francisco’s ever-evolving story.
