Founded in 1857 during the Gold Rush St John’s Episcopal Church stands as a testament to San Francisco’s enduring spirit. It’s the third oldest church in the Episcopal Diocese of California a fact often overlooked amidst the city’s more famous landmarks. But St John’s boasts a history far richer than its age might suggest.

Imagine its first simple structure. This humble building served a burgeoning community. It witnessed the hopes and dreams of those seeking fortune during the Gold Rush. Later in the 1880s its third rector played a pivotal role in establishing St Luke’s Hospital. This was the only San Francisco medical institution that provided care for the city’s Chinese community. A truly remarkable and often untold contribution to San Francisco’s history.

Then came the 1890s. The church constructed a grand granite neo-Byzantine basilica. This magnificent structure unfortunately met a tragic end. It was dynamited in 1906 during the devastating earthquake and fire. This act served as a desperate firebreak. Some whisper that the church’s Senior Warden Sunny Jim Rolph a controversial figure at the time was the target of this somewhat drastic measure.

The current Tudor Lantern style building dates to 1909. It stands as a phoenix from the ashes a symbol of resilience and rebirth. Yet the story doesn’t end there. The 1960s saw St John’s become an unlikely hub of counterculture activity. Under the leadership of Reverend Albert O Lott the church hosted progressive theater performances. It also played host to lively community debates known as the Wednesday Night Fights. The church even hosted the wedding of Country Joe McDonald an event that graced the cover of Country Joe and the Fish’s 1968 album Together.

The church’s role didn’t end with the 60s. In the 1970s facing neighborhood decay Reverend Winston Ching founded St John’s Educational Threshold Center. This program provided invaluable tutoring for Mission District youth. Its proximity to the Castro District also saw St John’s become a welcoming haven for the LGBTQ+ community. It became a steadfast advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within the broader Anglican church.

St John’s faced a recent challenge. In March 2024 a suspected arson attack forced the church to close on Good Friday. However the church persevered. It celebrated Easter and continues to serve its community. This remarkable history unfolds before you a testament to the spirit of San Francisco and the enduring power of faith. The vibrant community of St John’s continues to thrive. It offers sanctuary to the unhoused provides food and more importantly offers a welcoming space for all.
