Initially, SKS Investments proposed 181 Fremont Street as a 900-foot skyscraper. But the developers reduced the height. This was to comply with the area’s 700-foot height limit. The tower’s design got approval in December 2012.
Construction began in 2013. It cost about US$500 million. The building opened in May 2018.
181 Fremont has 57 floors. It offers 684000 square feet of space. There are 17 elevators. The lower 35 floors feature office space. The upper 16 floors house 67 condos. The 39th floor includes residential amenities. It also has a two-story open-air terrace.
Upon completion, 181 Fremont was the tallest mixed-use building in San Francisco. It surpassed the nearby Millennium Tower. It was also the second-tallest in the Western United States.

In 2017, Meta Platforms leased the entire office space in 181 Fremont. However, in May 2023, Meta put its entire space up for sublease. This happened during San Francisco’s office vacancy crisis.
