Before 1980 the San Francisco Symphony shared the War Memorial Opera House. This created scheduling conflicts. The Symphony needed its own space. Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall provided that permanent home. The 2743-seat hall cost 28 million dollars to build. Its completion marked a new era for the orchestra.
Designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Pietro Belluschi the hall’s acoustics are truly remarkable. A movable “cloud” of acrylic panels over the stage adjusts the sound. Fabric banners further fine-tune the reverberation. This ensures optimal sound for every performance. Initially the hall’s size presented acoustic challenges. A 10-million-dollar renovation in 1992 solved those issues. This improved the hall’s acoustics and beauty.
The Fratelli Ruffatti organ is a highlight. This electro-pneumatic pipe organ was added in 1984. It boasts 147 ranks and 9235 pipes. This makes it a visually stunning and musically versatile instrument. The console is mobile. Its placement adapts to the concert program. It can even be stored offstage when not in use.
Beyond the main hall lies the Harold L. Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall. This has three separate rehearsal spaces. The largest mirrors the Opera House stage. This is perfect for opera and ballet rehearsals. Davies Hall also features offices a music library dressing rooms and a recreation room. A private dining room the Wattis Room is available for major donors. A planned recital hall was never constructed.
Outside a Henry Moore bronze sculpture stands proudly. This sculpture adds to the hall’s artistic appeal. Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall hosts various events.
