Notre Dame des Victoires, meaning “Our Lady of Victories”, isn’t just a name. It’s a whisper of resilience carried on the winds of time, echoing the struggles and triumphs of a community forged in the crucible of the Gold Rush. The story of Notre Dame des Victoires begins not here, amidst the towering buildings of modern San Francisco, but in a simple army chapel in 1848. A French priest, Père Langlois, having journeyed with French Canadian trappers from Oregon, found himself amidst the burgeoning chaos of Gold Rush San Francisco. He began to celebrate mass, offering solace and connection to the influx of French immigrants. The first dedicated home for this burgeoning French Catholic community came in 1856. Gustav Touchard, a visionary of his time, acquired a former Baptist church on Bush Street, transforming it into the first Église Notre Dame des Victoires. The church became a beacon of faith and culture, a haven for French immigrants seeking a sense of belonging in a new and unfamiliar land. Disaster struck in 1906. The great earthquake and fire that ravaged San Francisco reduced the original church to ashes. Yet, from the ashes, hope emerged. A new church, designed by Louis Brochoud, rose in its place. Completed in 1913, the Romanesque structure we see today, with its distinctive buff-colored brick and polygonal towers, stands as a symbol of the community’s unwavering faith.
